Timeline of the Star Wars Galaxy

One Year Ago- when I started this blog- I wanted a place where I could explore everything Star Wars in anticipation of Episode VII. I spent about 6-months rehashing the history of the Star Wars franchise from its origins in 1975 until the recent onslaught of Star Wars parodies. I took a break from Star Wars this summer, but with the new film only two years away it's time for me to jump back on the Max Reebo Band Wagon.

This year I will be concentrating not on the history of the Star Wars franchise, but the history of the galaxy itself. I will be starting at the infancy of the Jedi Order (25,000 years before the Battle of Yavin) and finishing with the distant descendants of the Skywalker / Solo family (about 140 years after the Battle of Yavin). Of course there is only one way to cover that big of timeline- The Comics.

For the next year, I will make it my mission to read hundreds and hundreds of Star Wars comics and review the history of The Galaxy. I will lay out my mission right here in case anyone wants to join me in my endeavor. So let's go back.... waaayyyy back.

Pre-Republic
The first Star Wars era is the Pre-Republic Era which explores the infancy of the Jedi order. The ongoing series DAWN OF THE JEDI is the only material covering this long-gone time (25,000 years before the Battle of Yavin). I will be reviewing this series in Early October and there have only been 10 issues published so far. If you would like to read along with me feel free!

Republic
Next we will zip further in the future to the early days of the republic (5,000 years before the Battle of Yavin) and cover TALES OF THE JEDI and KNIGHTS OF THE OLD REPUBLIC. These are fascinating sagas that have to do with the early days of the Sith (when they were a race instead of a religion) and also the Mandalorian Wars.

Exar Kun had a double-bladed saber in 1995, long before Maul in Phantom Menace (1999)

Rise of Empire
Into the future we travel until we end up in the Prequel Era (or The Rise of the Empire). Now the movies set in this time period were a let down, but not the comics. In 1999 they began to publish a comic called REPUBLIC and the story line continues today in THE DARK TIMES. This wonderful series is over 100 issues long and still running. It follows Jedi that we only glimpsed in the prequels, such as Ki-Adi-Mundi and Ayla Secura. The series is one of my personal favorites and I will be devoting three blogs to this arc.

Rebellion Era
Moving into the Classic Era (or the Rebellion Era) I will review STAR WARS: EMPIRE, STAR WARS REBELLION, and the brand new BRIAN WOOD'S STAR WARS. These comics feature the heroes we know and love: Luke, Leia, Han, Chewie and even Darth Vader & Boba Fett. They also have a classic feel to them, as if we were stepping back into the 1970s and watching The Wars for the first time.

New Republic
As fall turns to winter I will focus on some older comics set in the New Republic Era, namely DARK EMPIRE & CRIMSON EMPIRE- The latter of which will set up the New Jedi Order Era in which we will explore the comic series INVASION. The majority of the Star Wars novels are set in this time period, but I would argue that these comics capture the feel of Star Wars in a way a novel never could.

Legacy Era
Finally this spring we will conclude our trip through the Star Wars Timeline in which we travel into the distant future. I will review the series LEGACY which stars the great great Grandson of Luke Skywalker. This is certainly the darkest Star Wars comics get (far darker than any of the movies), but is also some of the best stuff the entire franchise has to offer.

So read along with me if you'd like (I can post some of the series on my google docs)- or at least read the blog posts. We are still a long way off from Episode VII, but that doesn't mean we can't have fun!

See you in October!
