Aliens of Rogue One

Gigoran

The Gigoron were a tall species not-unlike-wookies with long fur. Though their fur was often white- brown, grey and black shades were not unheard of. Their fur served them well on planet Gigor, a frozen world in the Outer Rim. Gigorons were often enslaved or used as bodyguards.

A Gigoron named Moroff was a member of Saw Gerrera’s rebel cell. Like many Gigorons, Moroff wore a vocoder over his face to translate his native tongue into Galactic Basic. Many years later, Ymmoss (a female Gigoron) was a member of The Resistance.

Gigorons first appeared in a 1994 adventure journal article where they were described as peaceful primates that evolved from cave-dwellers.

Iakaru

On the planet Iakar, the Iakaru species evolved in the canopies of the widespread jungles. Their keen eyesight, acute spacial awareness, accurate depth perception, and quick reflexes enabled them to swing from the trees of their home planet. They were largely unknown in the wide-galaxy during the age of the Empire, because they had not yet developed hyperdrive technology. However pharmaceutical companies visited Iakar during the Clone Wars using the rainforests for research.

An Iakaru named Bistan joined the Rebellion after a special Rebel task force arrived on Iakar, seeking medical supplies. In Rogue One, Bistan was portrayed by Nick Kellington and was known as “Space Monkey” during filming.

Tognath

The Insectoid looking Tognath were native to planet Yar Tonga. Though they looked humanoid the Tognath hatched from eggs and had both an endoskeleton and exoskeleton. The Tognath also were immune to pain which aided them in combat.

Sometimes the eggs of the Tognath species would graft together before hatching. In these cases some Tognath were born as eggmates. Eggmates would often have possess telepathy with each other. The “Two Tubes” is an example of such eggmates. Bethni and Edrio were mercenaries associated with Enfys Nests’ Cloud Riders and Saw Gerrera’s rebel cell.

In addition to “Rogue One” and “Solo” the Tognath egg mates have appeared in “Rebels” and Marvel’s “Star Wars” line.

Talpini

The Talpini were a short species with a long frowning face. Hair covered the back of their heads and bottom of their chins and were known to come in shades of orange and white. Talpini often worked as spies, since their size allowed them an ability to blend in or hide.

Weeteef was the Talpini that appeared in “Rogue One”. Weeteef is portrayed by Warwick Davis who frequently portrays characters with W names including Wald, Weazel, Wodibin, Wollivan, and Wicket W. Warwick.

Since the release of Rogue One, various members of the Talpini species have appeared in the video game, “Star Wars Battlefront II” and the comics “Age of Republic - Jango Fett 1” and “Star Wars: Beckett 1”

Drabatan

The Drabatan were a large mouthed amphibious species native to the planet Pipada. Pipada was rich in natural resources and was quickly targeted by the Empire. Many of the Drabatan population was forced off planet and an imperial blockade was placed around the planet.

One female Drabatan, named Sa’Kalla, was a vocal opponent of the Imperial invasion of her world. She was later captured and executed in a public setting. Sa’Kalla became a martyr for the Drabatan people and many would cry her name before charging into battle.

Drabatans tended to have very long compound names, including Paodok'Draba'Takat Sap'De'Rekti Nik'Linke'Ti' Ki'Vef'Nik'NeSevef'Li'Kek who went by Pao for short. Pao was the Drabatan Rebel commando that appeared in “Rogue One”. Though Pao was originally designed as a spiky haired alien for “The Force Awakens” who did not appear in the final cut of the film.

Sabat

The Sabat were recognized by their cone-shaped heads, tufts of hair, and flat faces. A Sabat named Leevan Tenza was affiliated with Saw Gerrera's rebel cell. A Sabat named Gelan Yees was a member of the Enfys Nest’s Cloud-Riders.

Fans would have first glimpsed a Sabat in the comic “Obi-Wan and Anakin part II” several months before Leevan Tenza appearance in “Rogue One”. The species was first identified in the “Rogue One: The Ultimate Visual Guide” Another Sabat was featured in the comic “The Screaming Citadel Part I” a few months before Gelan Yees appeared in “Solo”.

Keredian

Keredians were a large yellow-green amphibian-like species. They were such an obscure race in the galaxy that even the location of their homeworld was not known to outsiders. Some Keredian joined up with Saw Gerrera's cell and later many joined the Rebel Alliance.

Cycyed Ock was the member of this species that appeared in “Rogue One”. He notably wore a cyber-optic wire connected to his brain to enhance vision and allow him to closely examine Kyber Crystals. Cycyed Ock also weilded a vibrorang with deadly accuracy.

Another Keredian named Ruk recently appeared in the book “Choose Your Destiny: A Luke & Leia Adventure”.

Meftian

Meftians were a strange looking species with black fur covering their bodies and white fur covering their heads. A Meftian by the name of Kullbee Sperado appeared in “Rogue One” as a member of Saw Gerrera's rebel cell.

It is noted in the “Star Wars: Smuggler's Guide” that both Kullbee Spearado and Cycyed Ock survived the destruction of Jedha in a Z-95 headhunter. Actor Robert Nairne portrayed Cycyed Ock and Kullbee Sperado in “Rogue One”.

Delphidian

Delphidians hailed from the Delphidian Cluster. Though there were many subspecies of Delphidians, all had leathery stripes that ran through their bodies and faces. The Delphidian language had many dialects that were used throughout the trade routes of the Delphidian Cluster.

The Delphidian Durteel Haza appeared in “The Force Awakens” and another Delphidian that may have been Durteel Haza appeared in “Rogue One”.

Sidon Ithano, a Delphidian pirate, hid his appearance under a Kaleesh mask. He was known by many names including "Crimson Corsair", "Blood Buccaneer", and the "Red Raider".

Britarro

The Blue-skinned Britarro hailed from the planet Britaxis Minor. Their physical features include a bald head and flat nose. Nik Hepho was a Britarro bounty hunter who appeared as a background character in Jedha City in the film “Rogue One”. Britarro have also appeared in the comics “Tales from Vader's Castle 3” and “Doctor Aphra 20”.

Aliens of The Force Awakens

Abednedo

The Abednedo were a long-faced species from a planet of the same name. Long ago they evolved to live in underground warrens. They which sported mouth-tendrils which once helped them navigate subterranean tunnels. Abednedo were a highly adaptable species and were found spread across the galaxy. Though they had their own language and writing system, they were proficient at learning foreign languages as well.

No species is more prolific in the Star Wars sequel trilogy than the Abednedo. A half-dozen Abednedo characters appeared in “The Force Awakens” and “The Last Jedi” and one was even voiced by Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

Interestingly, many Abenedo are named in homage to Beastie Boys albums and song titles including “Hello Nasty”, “Ill Communication”, “Root Down”, “Brass Monkey”, and “Slow and Low”.

Crolute / Gilliand

Crolutes were a species from the oceanic planet of Crul. They were a massive species with buoyant flesh perfectly suited for the shallow salty seas of Crul. Surprisingly, Crul were able to live comfortably outside of their homeworld waters, even in the driest of planets. Crolutes claimed that their entire species were male, whilst their female mates were called Gilliands. However, this would seem to contradict the very nature of the term “species”.

When designing the Crolute character of Unkar Plutt for “The Force Awakens”, artists used the real life Blobfish as inspiration. Aunt Z, the bartender on Colossus Platform, was a Gilliland who has the same blob-like appearance as the male Crolutes.

Teedo

Teeo were a short species native to the desert world of Jakku. Many Teedo wore a mask, cloth wrappings, and other equipment. Because of the arid conditions of the planet, many Teedo wore a water recycling device. Though few rarely saw what Teedo looked like beneath their wrappings, they were known to have reptilian-like features.

Teedo did not have a good concept of individuality due to the fact that they were telepathic with other members of the species. As a consequence, every member of the species referred to themselves imply as “Tedo”.

Many Tedo scavenged the dunes of Jakku in search of junk to trade. Many also rode cybernetically enhanced creatures known as Luggabeasts.

Kyuzo

Kyuzo were a yellow-eyed species from Phatrong, a world with ultra-heavy gravity. The Kyuzo evolved exceptional muscles giving them unusual super-strength. Martial arts and combat was prominent in Kyuzo culture, as well a strong sense of justice. Many Kyuzo went on to serve as law enforcers, though others took jobs and mercenaries or bounty hunters.

Kyuzo first appeared in Star Wars media in a 2010 episode of “The Clone Wars” which featured a Kyuzo bounty hunter named Embo. Later during the market campaign for “The Force Awakens”, two different action figures of a Kyuzo named “Constable Zuvio” appeared. There was a lot of buzz around Zuvio’s role in the film, but a few months later, when the film released, Zuvio was nowhere to be seen. Eagle-eyed fans may be able to spot Zuvio and his fellow Kyuzo law enforcement if they look carefully in the Niima Outpost scenes.

Dowutin

Dowutins evolved on the frozen planet of Dowut. They were very large beings with thick skin, sharp claws, and chin horns. From childhood Dowutins were expected to learn hunting skills to survive. Consequently, many Dowutins became mercenaries, poachers, and bounty hunters.

Grummgar was the Dowutin big game hunter who appeared in “The Force Awakens” along side of his apparent girlfriend, the human Bazine Netal. Grummgar was also the main character of the Alan Dean Foster short story “Bait” which released shortly after “The Force Awakens”.

Ottegan

Ottegans look quite similar to the Ithorian species and are indeed related to “Hammer Heads”, though it is not certain when their genetic lines split from each other or how. Unlike their distant cousins, Ottegans had a single mouth and were sometimes mockingly called “lone mouths” by Ithorians.

Praster Ommlen was the Ottegan that appeared in Maz Kanata’s castle in “The Force Awakens”.

Blarina

The short, Blarnia species were known for getting into trouble and out of trouble easily. They were said to have a way with words. They could lie convincingly and loved to play tricks. Blarina were physically impressive creatures who could survive extreme temperatures and were resistant to poison and disease. Under their small pink snouts, they had a mouth full of many sharp teeth.

Wollivan was the Blarina that appeared in “The Force Awakens”. Woolivan is portrayed by Warwick Davis who frequently portrays characters with W names including Wald, Weazel, Wodibin, Weeteef, and Wicket W. Warwick.

Bravaisian

Bravaisians were a long-snouted blue species from the volatile world of Bravais. On their home planet, the sun was too hot during the day for life to exist, however, at night nocturnal beings, including the Bravaisians would emerge from their burrows. To preserve their sensitive eyes attuned to dark conditions, Bravasians would wear goggles when venturing to other worlds- although some opted to have their eyes surgically removed rather than bother with goggles. Another odd feature of Bravasians were their dexterous tongues, which they would use to manipulate objects instead of their hands. This is due to the fact that the species were Insectivores

Two Bravaisians named Sonsigo and Munduri were frequent visitors to Maz Kanata’s castle. They were brought to life through the art of hand puppetry, instead of having someone under a mask or in a costume.

Cosian

Cosians were a beak-mouthed species with tails that ended in tufts. Trivially, their eyes blinked upward instead of downward. Tera Sinube was a Jedi Master Cosian who specialized in criminal investigation.

Cosians first appeared in a Season 2 episode of “The Clone Wars” in 2010 and did not appear in “The Force Awakens”. However, a genetically modified version of their race known as Nu-Cosian did have representation in TFA.

Nu-Cosian

Nu-Cosians are a genetically engineered subspecies of the Cosians. They were modified in order to colonize the planet Cos Secundu near the Deep Core. :Like Cosians, Nu-Cosians were long-necked, yet Nu-Cosians lacked a beak and sported a flatter nose and wider mouth. Nu-Cosian tails were more muscled and sometimes used for self-defense.

Bobbajo was the Nu-Cosian from “The Force Awakens”. Interestingly, this character first appeared alongside of J.J. Abrahms in a “Force For Change” Youtube video in May of 2014, a year and a half before the release of Episode VII.

Gabdorin

Gabdorins are a large amphibious species with a bulbous head. Gabodrins had unusually large sweat glands and pig-like nostrils. Quiggold appeared in “The Force Awakens” as part of Sidon Ithano's crew (which Finn almost joined while in Maz Kanata’s Castle). Another Gabdorin named Krynodd appeared in the “Star Wars Adventures” comic line.

In “The Force Awakens” Quiggold had a peg leg, and was portrayed by a real amputee named Scott Richardson. There were many animatronic systems built into Quiggold’s face allowing for a range of motion.

Tarsunt

The Tarsunt were a furry species from the Tarsunt system. Their long faces came in many shades including yellow and purple.

The most notable Tarsunt in the galaxy was Lanever Villecham who served as Chancellor of the New Republic about 30-years after Mon Mothma (the New Republic’s first Chancellor). Villecham was tragically killed when the First Order blew up Hosnian Prime, the capital of the New Republic. Villecham appeared briefly in “The Force Awakens”.

Another notable Tarsunt was Vober Dand who served as a controller in the Resistance. Dand appeared extensively in the Resistance scenes in both “The Force Awakens” and “The Last Jedi”.

Shozer

The Shozer were a small species with black eyes. They often wore a scarf over their mouths, though they did not appear to need any special breathing device.

Goss Toowers was a Shozer that provided mechanical support to the Resistance in both “The Force Awakens” and “The Last Jedi”. Another Shozer named Krel Noviip appared in the game “Star Wars: Uprising”.

Urodel

The Urodel species were amphibious and included the resistance fighter Boddie Prindel. The species had broad noses and large gaping mouths. Their bodies were shaded pink and grey.

Boddie Prindel appeared in both “The Force Awakens” and “The Last Jedi” where he was performed by Ian Whyte and animatronicly performed by Patrick Comerford.
